Charlie Weis Fired by Notre Dame

Charlie Weis Fired by Notre Dame

It's official. Charlie Weis has been fired by Notre Dame after a day's worth of speculation that just such an administrative action would take place, bringing and end to Weis' tumultuous tenure as the Irish head coach.

The New York Daily News reports:
Charlie Weis is out as Notre Dame head football coach, a source close to the program told the Daily News.  AD Jack Swarbrick has decided to make a change after Weis finished the season with a 6-6 record and four straight losses to Navy, Pitt, Connecticut and Stanford.

After all of the speculation, including the rumors about Bob Stoops and Brian Kelly, this seems like it was just a matter of time until the Fighting Irish made their move.

Even after Irish standouts Golden Tate and Jimmy Clausen voiced their support for Chuckles, it seemed as though it was too little, too late.  Both have openly said they would be discussing their decision to leave for the NFL Draft with Weis, regardless of his position with the university.

As for Weis, his future options have included returning to the NFL as a coordinator, or possibly even a head coach.  And for the Irish, who do they turn to now and will they be able to hold onto their treasure trove of incoming recruits?

Update: ESPN's Joe Schaad confirms -- via a coaching staff source -- that Weis is indeed out. It seems likely at this point that Weis will either end up as an offensive coordinator in the NFL or performing on Oxygen's "Dance Your Ass Off" weight-loss reality television show, although it's really a toss-up as to which one will prevail.

Not saying Weis shouldn't have gotten fired. Just saying the media beat him up pretty good.

Here's my take on the contrasting paths of Charlie Weis and Tim Tebow.
