Harrison Barnes' Decision: North Carolina

Harrison Barnes' Decision: North Carolina

Harrison Barnes' recruiting announcement had a tiny touch of fanfare -- there were balloons, some cameras, a little confetti. Oh, and like 40 live blogs, internet freakouts, live ESPNU camera streams, Twitter freakouts and, yeah, it was insane (as Matt Moore already mentioned). But in the end, it all came down to one, um, Skype.

Barnes leaned over the MacBook (Apple...cha ching!) and Skyped Coach Roy Williams, who was with the entire North Carolina squad awaiting his call.  No doubt this is a huge win for North Carolina, who beat out Duke, Kansas, Iowa State, Oklahoma, and UCLA for the Number 1 player in the Nation.

The decision was one that everyone knew would carry heavy implications.  As for North Carolina, Barnes joins a recruiting class that has already had LOI's signed by Reggie Bullock and Kendall Marshall. Sitting at #4 overall in Scout.com's team rankings, the Heels are guaraunteed to move up.  To #1? Chances are pretty dang good as the three 5 Star players carry enough fire power in the recruiting world to trump most all classes so far, but to displace Ohio State will be tough. Hard to argue with at least a bid for the top spot as Barnes sits at #1 overall, Bullock is at #11 and PG Marshall comes in at #21. But with the remainder of the early signing period still to go, and the Spring period coming, the classes could, and will certainly change in the rankings. We'll just have to wait and see. But one thing is for certian, as soon as that LOI is faxed in and received by Roy and Co. in Chapel Hill, Harrison Barnes becomes a Tar Heel tonight.
