Bob Griese Suspended for Juan Pablo-Montoya 'Taco Comment'

Bob Griese Suspended for Juan Pablo-Montoya 'Taco Comment'

Bob Griese made a really stupid comment on Saturday afternoon while in the announcing booth for Minnesota-Ohio State game, and it wasn't anything even related to justifying the Big 10's place in the national hierarchy. No, it was much worse. And much more racist -- while ESPN was showing a graphic with the top-5 NASCAR drivers, Chris Speilman questioned where Juan Pablo-Montoya was.

And Griese responded that Montoya was "out having a taco." (which you can hear at the bottom of the post). Naturally, he's been suspended for a week by the network, who's having a bit of an, ahem, rough week.

But, yeah, anyway, ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz says Griese will not be working a game this week. Krulewitz says ESPN has spoken to Griese and "he understands the comment was inappropriate."

Now, that's great that Griese knows that, but it's kind of shoddy that this is somehow flying under the radar because, frankly, this is kind of really, really, bad thing -- it was obviously racist, it was malicious as hell and it wasn't even really accurate; Montoya is freaking Colombian. Sigh.

Anyway, on the bright side, Griese didn't even manage to harm the much, MUCH richer Montoya, who refused to comment on the situation or even acknowledge that Griese was a real human being, stating that he'd never heard of him. So, yeah, that's a bigger burn.

Are you kidding me! What has America come to, this was obviously a LIGHT HEARTED COMMENT. It was NOT, I repeat, NOT a racist remark by Bob Griese. Hispanic people eat tacos just like anglos eat hamburgers. Have we become so sensitive as a nation that anything a WHITE person says, no matter what context it is said, White America has to say I am sorry. I hear derogatory remarks made about whites all the time. On ESPN the two stu's not once, but twice referred to a white NFL player as a WHITE BOY! Where they suspended-NO!!! CAN YOU SAY REVERSE RACISM!!! It's ok though, some day it will bite all minorities in the ass.

@LOX.P: "Hispanic people eat tacos just like anglos eat hamburgers". You see? That's precisely why it's racist. It's like "hell, all hispanics and brownies are the same!" Dude, the first time I ever ate a Taco here in Puerto Rico was when I was 12, at Taco Bell. There is no nation of "Hispania" where we all come from. We have different cultures and yes, diets too.

thanks acephreak. also, when one white dude says something racist we ("Hispanics" don't hold all white people accountable or demand that "white America" (whatever that means) appologize. Racism doesn't only mean white offending non-white. There's no such thing as "reverse racism".

A little openness and effort in understanding goes a long way.
the sooner people of ALL backgrounds get this the happier everyone will be. It's 2009 people, can we learn about each other and get passed this please?
