SEC Suspends Error-Prone Referees From Upcoming Prime Time Game

SEC Suspends Error-Prone Referees From Upcoming Prime Time Game

Earlier today, our own Jeff Dantzler went off on a fabulous rant about the inherent problem with running the most notorious college football officiating crew back onto the field for a primetime game this week. Well, SEC commish Mike Slive must be all up on our RSS feed, because guess what: Problem solved.

That's right, the SEC has suspended the officials for Saturday's game after the debacle on the field last Saturday in the Arkansas - Florida game according to an SEC press release.

“A series of calls that have occurred during the last several weeks have not been to the standard that we expect from our officiating crews,” said Slive. “I believe our officiating program is the best in the country, however, there are times when these actions must be taken.”

“While only a few calls have been identified, the entire crew shoulders responsibility for each play. I have taken this action because there must be accountability in our officiating program,” added Slive. “Our institutions expect the highest level of officiating in all of our sports and it is the duty of the conference office to uphold that expectation.”

So, yeah, this is good news -- even if it's not cool to personally blame the officials for problems that occur on the field, it's still worth taking them out of the spotlight and, really, off the field for a while to let everyone breath. And that's exactly what will happen -- the refs won't be able step back on the field until November 14th, and you can bet then that they won't be slotted for the 3:30 CBS game, either.
